This week’s Monday Morning Meeting is as free as the free press. Let’s remind our kids of the wonderful resource that our journalists and reporters provide by giving them a firsthand experience with creating their own family newspaper.
Ordinarily the Monday Morning Meeting is part of the paid subscription. I wanted you to have this one for free. If you’d like to subscribe for past episodes or future ones, you can do that now!
You will want to help them write:
A news article that answers the five W questions: Who, What, Where, When and Why
A human interest piece where their interview a family member—perhaps someone who served in the military or someone else who traveled to the Galapagos Islands
An editorial gives your child writer a chance to put their opinion about an issue of interest in the newspaper
Newspapers also include comic strips and word games like crossword puzzles
Finally, it’s not a newspaper without a few ads!
Help your child know how to type their work into columns that can be printed and then glued to the newspaper backing (whether you manage to get newsprint or you use computer paper).
Be sure to name the paper too!
If your kids have never seen a newspaper, take them to the library. Usually they have papers to peruse. It’s nice to have the tactile experience of a paper before creating one.
Hope yours turns out great!
