This episode gives some ideas for how to catalyze a love of art!
Be forewarned: your children will want to go to a museum once they’ve listened so you may want to put that in the plan now! You only need to stay for an hour, by the way. Just long enough to look at 2-3 paintings.
You may also want to gather some coffee table art books from the local library or Half Price Books. I recommend looking for Van Gogh self-portraits too, as that is one of the activities I recommend.
Lastly, if you have a makeup mirror and an easel, you’ll be all set for the self-portrait part of the episode. One of the lessons I learned recently at a creative workshop is that it’s okay to not keep everything you create. Sometimes it feels good to enjoy the process of creating the art and then balling it up and returning it to oblivion. If your children want to do that, that’s a well known practice in the art world so don’t worry too much! Tell them they are behaving like artists!
If they like their work, put it somewhere to be admired.
Why appreciate art, you ask? Because it teaches careful observation, interpretation, and the power of visual story-telling.
Enjoy!
