I remember a book my own mom couldn't get through without tears. I ended up reading that part aloud, just to get through. We knew enough of our mom's life to understand the tears intellectually, I think, but different things actually make children and adults sob. They have a hard time with the first act of Annie, I cry at a performance of Haydn's Creation. I can't remember what book my mom struggled reading, so I can't reread it, but I definitely remember the day!

I full-on sobbed when reading my kids Louise Erdrich’s The Birchbark House. They took it in stride, hopefully with a small appreciation for my humanity that they might recall someday.
