I’ve been learning Italian very seriously for the last year and a half and when practicing translations and things I don’t ever use punctuation. It just bogs me down so I can see how this could be the same for kids. I never did formal spelling with my kids outside of copy work and it’s really amazing how they picked it up on their own! Even my child with dyslexia! Now two of my kids are going to a competitive university and my daughter was selected for a study to help tutor kids in the English section of the SAT because she got an almost perfect score. We always prioritized math and reading but it’s also amazing to think about the things we really don’t have to stress about!
