Today’s writing prompt:
Have you heard the question: what one book would you take with you to a deserted island? Pick your favorite storybook or novel. Now, write from that book’s perspective and have it describe what it would be like to be stuck on an island with YOU.
Share your child’s freewrite in the comments if you’d like! (Or feel free to share your freewrite too!)
New to freewriting?
Freewriting is the vehicle by which we trick our inner selves into expressing the words and ideas that we want to share but are afraid won’t come out right on paper if we do. So, read the freewriting prompt, set the timer for 5-10 minutes then have your child write whatever comes to mind. We invite you to freewrite too, at the same time as your kids. Just keep the pencil moving until “ding”—when the timer rings!

Jinan - 10 years old. The book that I picked is the giver.
Every day I hear the abrubt sound of the girl awakening me from my slumber. That would probably be the most wonderful part of the day for me. Knowing that there is someone who is yearning to read me. When she comes racing out of her shelter and runs with a bright smile on her face, I know there is something different about her. She always waits for the night to shift into the day, and the shores to hit the island under the glimmering sun, just so she can enjoy the plain words in me. Sometimes she stayes up all night reading her favorite parts of my story. I belong to her now, and I wouldn't want any of that to change.
My kiddos (5, 8, 11, and 14) all loved this prompt! Thank you!
