Friday Freewrite: 360 Degree View
Freewriting is that wonderful key that unlocks the writer within.
Today’s writing prompt:
Pencil and paper in hand, stand in the middle of your room and write down the name of the first object you see in front of you. Turn a bit to the left (or right!) and record the next object you see. Keep turning and jotting down the items till you come back to the place where you started.
Now write a poem (maybe title it, “A 360 Degree View of My Room”) and use the list of words you collected. You might use one word per line or group some words together. It’s up to you!
Share your child’s freewrite in the comments if you’d like! (Or feel free to share your freewrite too!)
New to freewriting?
Freewriting is the vehicle by which we trick our inner selves into expressing the words and ideas that we want to share but are afraid won’t come out right on paper if we do. So, read the freewriting prompt, set the timer for 5-10 minutes then have your child write whatever comes to mind. We invite you to freewrite too, at the same time as your kids. Just keep the pencil moving until “ding”—when the timer rings!

We completed Bravewriter 101 earlier this spring. It was a life changing class. We have continued with our freewrite Fridays consistently. Today, my son, who did not find writing to be joyful or fun no matter my attempts, jumped into this freewrite with ideas and vision. He proudly wrote a "Book of Poetry" about the many objects in his room.He wrote longer than I did today! He proudly shared aloud with smiles and confidence. His room. His poetry. His voice. Oh, his writer's voice--that sang and filled out kitchen.I am so happy to meet him and join him on this writer's journey. This was so much fun and a sweet memory that I will hold close for our family.
