20 Monday Morning Meeting: Back to Homeschool Hamburger

A gentle re-entry writing activity for your kids!

Welcome back to the Monday Morning Meeting! It’s great to have you here with your kids.

Today’s episode teaches kids how to create a construction paper hamburger with a few short writing prompts.

A couple of years my kids and I made these back-to-school hamburgers from construction paper I had laying around. Circles of tan paper for buns, a circle of black for the hamburger (can be other colors for other kinds of meat or vegetarian options), green lettuce, yellow Swiss cheese (my kids loved using a hole puncher for the holes), and a red paper tomato shape.

On each one, I asked them to answer a single question in writing:

  1. Top bun (write inside the bun): Best memory from summer

  2. Lettuce: Something that got accomplished (learning to swim, finishing a chapter book, baking cookies without help, riding a loop-de-loop roller coaster)

  3. Tomato: A movie you saw and what you liked/didn’t like about it

  4. Cheese: A place you went that you enjoyed. What did you enjoy about it?

  5. Meat: Something you look forward to doing this fall

  6. Bottom bun (write inside of the bun): Something you want to learn this year

You can add lines to each of the hamburger pieces or you can have your kids write freehand (or jot down their answers for them if they don’t write yet).

Staple the burger together and read it a few more times over the next week or two.

Creates a nice transition from the fun of summer to the new energy of fall.
